Something us Americans celebrate to remember that these British folk hated you Brits, came down here, got hit by a storm, and tried to make a civilization only to be kidnapped by Indians. How did we escape? We gave 'em beer and alcohol. And they even gave us fish and corn. It was a beautiful day indeed.

People don't know what Christmas is about anymore. Most people think it's about presents, when really it's about spending time around your family, enjoying the gifts they give you.

I mean, people don't care who gives them presents anymore so long as it isn't a communist.

Actually, Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ and what you stated is how people celebrate it.

Ironically, Easter is, technically, more important to a Christian than Christmas.

In a way, this is good since the important holiday, Easter, has retained it's importance with only minimal commercialization, while the not-as-important one, Christmas, takes the bullet (symbolized by greedy corporations, and secularization).

For the record, I forego the celebration of Christmas (both religious and secular forms). Heck, I've even abstained from "celebrating" people's birthdays. For that matter, I don't even celebrate my own birthday. To knock that up a notch, I don't think I celebrate anything (Remembrance Day (Canadian) doesn't count ... You can't "celebrate" the sacrifice soldiers made during WWI ... Hmm, yet, we can somehow celebrate the sacrifice "our Lord and saviour" Jesus Christ made for "our sins"**).


** Denotes something I don't believe in, and usually means I'm being satirical and/or poking fun at something.

I wish I could pick-and-choose my own beliefs too and legitimize said beliefs as true to the original doctrine of the religion I took them from and, get this, package those same beliefs neatly so they fit well within mainstream Western culture. God forbid we try to hold on to all of our beliefs like those Muslims and Jews do and face ridicule for not being modern enough.

Man, wow, after re-reading that rant, it seems like a really bad criticism/borderline insult of the Protestant movement. If anyone was offended, I apologize.

To be fair, Lutheranism and all sects of Protestantism's core beliefs involve the individual's own interpretation of faith ... So, you were justified when you said you find Christmas > Easter. In fact, a Lutheran in Europe might find Easter > Christmas. It all depends on the individual. I'm glad I brought up this point before someone else did ... Man, I would have looked so foolish.

i love thanksgiving, beside the whole good food thing, its one of the few times of the year my whole family is home and we sit at the same table and eat, we even do the corny go around the table and say what were thankful for thing, its one of the best holidays for me <img src='/images/emoticons/smiley1.png'>

i think it would be better if everyday was like thanksgiving. . . minus the overeating and commercialization part. spending time with your family, and being thankful, every day. it would be nice. unrealistic, but nice.

First of all, I'm jewish, I am ought to be offended. which I am. as for muslims, I can't say.
Anyway, I thought christmas was about jesus but I guess I'm wrong. As far as I can tell, christmas is about some fat guy who lives in a biome without any land and somehow gets superior japanese and chinese technology to our homes once a year.
