What are your opinions about this project? It just started today and the test results will end around or after October 21st.

For those who don't know it is the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator complex, this is intended to collide opposing beams of protons charged with high energy.

More information about this project: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider

People are having theories that this project might start a chain reaction and create a black hole though the CERN and a group of dependent scientists discussed this issue in court and with the public that there is no real threat about this project though some people deny. What are your opinions about LHC?

You realise of course that they have yet to send them in opposite directions, right?

While I would hate for black holes to eat the world (that being where I keep all my stuff), I highly doubt it will cause any micro black holes. The chances are quite small, anyway. Besides which, even if they did create micro black holes, the odds of them continuing to exist long enough to do any damage at all are also very small.

Besides, think of what good this might do. For one thing, we could potentially finally move forward or maybe even prove the Big Bang theory. Whatever does happen, we are almost certain to learn something. So, I suppourt it.

Sorry, physics isn't really my area of interest, so I'm rather indifferent to the whole thing. Not that it doesn't sound interesting, it's just that I can't get too excited over it.

And as far as this whole doomsday scenario thingy, I have a strong feeling it's mostly just media hysteria, but if there were to be some sort of apocalypse as a result, could it happen a cooler way?

I know that it will be a less likely chance that this machine will create a blackhole, I just wanted to see opinions about this project like "Would they really prove that Higgs boson really exists?" "Would they really find the reason why the universe was created?"
Mostly those are questions but opinionated questions that would be interesting if they become true.

I do not really believe this project will destroy the world reason why I put it there because on other forums people jump to conclusions that this machine will kill us all.

Most people jump to that conclusion because while I'm sure the physics behind it is probably much more interesting, the end of the world scenario is much more sensational. Also, in the postmodern world (or perhaps the post-postmodern world) people are looking for any excuse they can get to say the world is about to end. A lot of people are actually looking forward to it.

So what are your thoughts? If no one;s going to discuss it with what we have here you might as well set the ball rolling. I don't know what it's going to take to keep the ball rolling, but as I said, physics isn't really my area. (that was a bad joke, by the way)

Well, it's not really that surprising that the topic hasn't taken off yet. Chidori only posted to make a joke and that only leaves 3 other people, really. Added to that is the fact that two seperate points of view haven't really been brought up yet...Meh, just rambling now...Moving on...

I guess I can only hope that somebody brings a different viewpoint in here soon. I'm willing to play Devil's Advocate if it comes to that, but I'd rather not...

Apparently they're guessing at what they could potentially find... Apparently their motive for this experiment is "Every time someone has done something in the past that has pushed the boundaries of science, something amazing has come out of it... so, there's a good chance some interesting discovery will come out of this as well, don't really know what yet, but it could possibly be something to do with [insert LHC team's predictions here], so it's worth a shot."

I hope they do find something, otherwise this is a huge waste of time really... even if they discover how to make energy weapons...

You almost said "large hard-on collider."

Everyone guesses at what they're going to find in science. That's why it's called an experiment. If we already knew what the results would be, then we wouldn't need to experiment in the first place, would we?

And where did you get that quote from? Or is it not a quote, but just an idea put in quotiation marks to make it look more official?

If it were as dangerous as people are so keen to point out, I doubt they'd be allowed to perform the experiment...

Well, after 5 years discussing the safety and dangers in court with a few of trusted scientists concluded the experiment is safe but the media seems to doubt it and try to get views by saying "this project will end the world as we know it."

We have no idea whats in a black hole anyway. For all we know it sends us to a realm where everything is a republic democracy, there's no green house gasses, and cancer is yesterday's chicken pox.

Apparently in a black hole time slows down infinitely (or speeds up infinitely, I'm not sure which is which, but apparently they're mathematically the same), and something happens where something does something. Actually, we know what's in a black hole, we just don't understand it.

well all we know now is that the LHC broke down... and the project is now postponed, and won't be up until next spring

They always break down.

Then again, there is the old addage:

If it blows up, it's chemistry.

If it stinks, it's biology.

If it doesn't work, it's physics.

So how would they get it to say "yes" if the world is destroyed? O__o

It's a joke.

I don't know what's all the panic and fuss about. The world will not be blown up by the LHC. The creation of a black hole, stranglets, strange matter are rather minimal. Even if it does occur, there is not enough mass to sustain itself in the split second it takes to create it (read up on Hawking Radiation). Besides even if the world does end, I would post here to keep you all informed on new developments
