One Piece is a popular pirate manga series by Eiichiro Oda. It was adapted into an anime series by Toei Animation. The manga is released in the US by Viz Media. The anime was formerly released in the US by 4Kids Entertainment and the release was heavily edited. It is currently being released by Funimation, who started from the beginning with an UNCUT dub.

I think all of the edits made the show more entertaining, and the new script was more accurate to the original than the original itself was. And the humor was so sophisticated. Adding an additional syllable to a word which should one? Oh ho, how silly. It makes them all sound like stupid brutes. A bunch of Bad-ass guys staging a rebellion against their king, because there's no water? How could that possibly be funny? Give them Super Soakers to fight with. Irony!

4Kids comedic genius is what makes 4Piece the superior edition of One Piece.

Oh-ho-ho. So clever, 4Kids. Secretly swapping out the skin colors of characters, to show that people can be cool, regardless of what skin color they have. Some children might never have liked their favorite character if they had known his skin was originally a color different from their own, but this brave company dared to show us that skin color doesn't matter. The first step in smashing the racial boundaries which divide our nation. Heck, 4Kids is practically single-handedly responsible for Barrack Obama taking office.

A clever reference to the concept of Hammerspace, in which case they turn a gun into a literal hammer, which certainly would not fit into Helmeppo's pocket. This might have gone kiddie's heads. An example of sophisticated adult humor, which blends seamlessly into series.

Yes, that's what I meant. That's what I like about Oda's storytelling. He can describe crazy sounding events in a way that in the end I have no problem accepting them. Personally, I think most complaints about this twist come from people who read the spoilers first..

Whitebeard is truly awesome. Not only did he open the gates by himself, but he also made a really cool underwater entrance.

Whitebeard's entrance was badass. This chapter would be perfect if it wasn't for those ugly pirate captains. XD But hey, that's what real life pirates look like, anyway. Btw, we don't know who opened the gate, yet. Maybe it wasn't Whitebeard. They all had their ships coated (those 43 ships, too, I assume) so they wouldn't need the gates to open.

The 4Kids dub, maybe, but Funimation took over and the quality of the content was vastly improved (the voice acting is about the same, though...different voices that are hit-or-miss like the original).

of you're talking 4Kids, Luffy's was not that good, it was too high-pitched for a kid in his late teens, there were noises that no person would make naturally, and Chopper's was ok until you got to the human transformation cuz he's supposed to sound the same in all forms

I suppose. They've failed and all that's left to do is run away. I'm calling dibs on the finale of the series being Straw Hat crew + additional help defeating the Blackbeard Pirates once they all arrive simultaneously at One Piece/final island in Grand Line (can't remember name) to SAAAAVE THE WOOOOOORLD!!!! As far as I can tell, the world is most stable when someone with no will to conquer anything possesses the "strongest in the world" title. If Blackbeard wins, everybody loses. Also dibs on Blackbeard's powers backfiring on him to cripple his GODMODE in the final battle.

I agree with you Titan. I want to know what's going on with the rest of the crew. After this arc I suspect that Luffy will have to meet up with each of his crewmates one at a time. And they just so happen to be on the way to one piece, but I suppose we'll see.

I'm hesitant to say it's the greatest series ever even though it's one of my single favorite series of all time but I don't think there's ever a single moment of OP that doesn't drag to some degree. *(stealth edit)I messed up the double negative in this sentence and had said the opposite of what I meant in the wording. I meant that One Piece drags quite slowly.... A LOT.* That's just Oda's style to be extremely long winded. If I were his editor I'd be shaving his story down to it's bones that would probably still be 20 feet across in diameter each. One Piece is the behemoth (look up the term) of manga/anime series.

Since he appeared in the last major arc I thought he was the most interesting Captain of the rookies since he's both a pirate captain as well as a DOCTOR and those two jobs don't overlap much the way my brain is hard-wired to think. His personality is such that I can somehow imagine rather peculiar scenes:

I went to the Funi panel at C2E2 to hear about any One Piece news. Sadly, nothing of importance.
However, during the Q&A the panelist mentioned they're working on more One Piece (what a shock) and gave a clue about what's going on with TV airings.
He mentioned that Toei and ADULT SWIM are working on something, but nothing is coming of it. He often tries to slip it into conversations with Adult Swim's reps but to no avail.
So, FUNI is trying to air One Piece on Adult Swim. Awesome.
I hope Adult Swim is interested in OP. One Piece is currently the only "SJ big three" anime not airing in the US.

As I said before, the pacing is legendarily long winded. Shit happens but.... maybe a little subtle passage of time between transitions should be arranged. For instance, the moment the war was declared to be over, then the flashback for this new mini-arc could be started and upon flashfowarding to present day, everything explained in the last two chapters could be paraphrased easily as such, "Is Ace dead? Yes. BWAAAA. Also, Blackbeard got his crewmates from Impel Down and Doflamingo is a massive dick." Then Hancock flashes herself to Luffy while the camera is behind her leaving what she actually looks like naked to our imaginations the same way bathing scenes always seem to work out. For all we know, she has a third nipple. Have fun with that mental image.

The generation preceding this one had the Ninja Turtles, which definitely gave ninjas the leg up in the eternal question: Who's cooler/stronger/better, Ninjas or Pirates? Now OP is one of the contributors to the other side and thus the battle rages on. I'm still quite certain CP9 was Oda personally weighing in on the subject since CP9 was basically a bunch of ninjas with super powers versus pirates with super powers.

The series continues to make the average strength crew members less important, namely Ussop (who is among my top 3 favorite crew due to the fact that he IS normal unlike clairvoyant thunder goddess Nami whose own power comes from Ussop who keeps getting the short end of the stick), and as of recent story arcs, more and more contrived reasons for his existence keep popping up. I'm hoping his separation from the crew helps remedy that.

When they decided to start animating episodes on a 1-1 ratio with the chapters so everything has to be stretched out ridiculously. It pisses me off. Aside from the actual art, I never care because all animes (or rather long running tv show animes) are generic and the art is always on the back burner.

Oda-sensei is relatively consistent with distinguishing features of his characters, and i can't see Sabo getting an entirely new hat, without at least keeping the goggles, or vice versa

i checked back over everything involving the revolutionaries to this point

i'm worried... Sabo hasn't been seen once...

They ALWAYS die. Everyone with even the slightest bit of a back story has had someone close to them who's died.

I wish they'd built up to revealing the character a little more though. Leave hints now and then, when Luffy and Ace talked. Would allow us to speculate a little more.

Not sure if I can agree with people getting so attached to him.

Not sure if this is really spoiler material for anyone that reads the thread but whatever. I can understand feeling for Luffy's pain but somehow it seems like this has all being done in reverse. Why is Ace's death so sad? I don't mean to harp on Ace, especially not now that he's dead, but most character introductions in the One Piece universe that possess any serious weight in the story involve a full back story but this time Oda has waited until after the PAYOFF to give us the reasons why we should give a shit besides our own emotional attachments to Luffy's suffering. Is Ace somehow the Boba Fett of this series wherein they appear only a couple of times and really aren't all that important to the plot to begin with but still maintain a significantly large fanbase? (STFU, I know Boba Fett is still alive in the expanded universe but you should probably understand that he was dead until publishers found out he was marketable *cue obligatory survival explanation*) What did we really KNOW about Ace before the "rescue ace" plot started? Alright, he and Luffy are brothers/half-brothers?/unrelatedbuttheyshareanunbreakablebondofbrotherhoo dforgedinthefiresofMountManliness but what else? How did he come to possess devil fruit powers? What's his personality defining favorite food? What were the inner workings of his and White Beard's relationship that changed his original intent of becoming the next pirate king? (blah blah daddy issues blah) When will Luffy finally use his third gear technique on Hancock? (BOW CHICKA BOW WOW) It seems as though all of this might eventually be explained but to do so now would only be throwing salt on a relatively shallow wound rather than setting up his death properly by strapping our hearts into an electric chair with him and throwing the switch.

TLDR: Build up a character BEFORE you kill them off, not after. It's not the same as expanding upon an established character after their death Harry Potter style with a couple very prominent father figures.

It would also reveal things about Whitebeard and how he wanted Ace to find One Piece. It would've taken focus away from what Luffy was doing as well.
If they did it during the current arc or slightly before it, people would know that he was going to die as well as the fact that it would interfere with the story when all people wanted was to see if Luffy could save Ace.

I think Ace was always supposed to be a slightly distant character from the rest of the main storyline. It allowed the anime and manga to slowly build up to Luffy finding out about Ace. Had the flashback occurred then, it would ruin the rising tension. If they had the flashbacks when Luffy found out about Ace, people would get annoyed, they want to see what happens. As well as that, people would start speculating about Sabo rather than caring about Ace.
To me, this seems like the only way to reveal Ace's past.

You're thinking is too narrow minded. When it comes to storytelling, the execution of a plot point has endless possibilities. Think about what I said concerning Harry Potter: we had 6 books worth of material to get to know Dumbledore before he kicked the bucket all of which he is present and very affluent throughout. I wasn't saying I wanted this explained JUST BEFORE Ace's death. I was saying I wanted this explained LONG BEFORE Ace's death.

I also didn't say it had to be all at once. Not to say one method is better than another, but I think very brief flashbacks would have been sufficient every time Ace was mentioned or even more sidetracks following Ace while he was hunting for Blackbeard rather than just the moment they meet and the instances in which he's locked up in Impel Down. Not only that, but this could have more efficiently utilized the wiggle room concerning the "sailing between islands" downtime the Strawhats have every time they pound another big bad into the dirt. Having a small appearance by Ace after every major story arc would have kept him fresh in our minds as if to say, "Hey there kids, did you like seeing Luffy caving in Crocodile's skull? Then shut up and pay attention, this will be important later."

To me One Piece feels more like a collection of stories with the same cast and universe as one another and while some of the stories are better than others, they all keep the audience fairly entertained. If I had been Oda's editor, I would have forced him to cut Skypiea and Thriller Bark altogether. Skypiea adds nothing to the series as a whole while Thriller Bark is just a retread of Alabasta in which they meet a new crew member and then help them protect something from one of the Warlords. Not that they didn't have their moments, but rather removing those singular instances and placing elsewhere within a different arc would have been significantly more efficient.

Despite the massive number of complaints I've had concerning this series, I still love One Piece, perhaps more than is normal considering how I analyze it obsessively. It's rare that a series is so full with content that even with it's diabetic tendencies to sit down and take a breather, Oda is still forced to leave scraps of it on the cutting room floor. He's a genuinely creative person with a predisposition to put as much as he can into each chapter despite the substantial amount of content he's plowing through. I much prefer a story be overstuffed than be so starved for ideas that it starts buying time by stretching 30 FUCKING chapters over the events of a single FUCKING battle. *begins stabbing Tite Kubo*

Visual storytelling 101: If someone is not explicitly shown dying on screen/page OR a body is not immediately discovered, more often than not, they aren't dead.

Many people above the secondary character demographic have a tendency to survive falls into bottomless black pits because presumably there is always a wormhole at the bottom that leads to the mattress and pillow factory.

Although it came out over two years ago in the US, the popular One Piece (Uncut) - Collection 1 comes to Australian shores at the start of spring. Available in both Japanese and English language tracks, this is the uncut version of the show that was not seen on Aussie TV screens for fear of offending the little ones.
