Osamu Tezuka is not a name that is very common anymore, however to those who have seen alot of anime and are very deep into it, he is known as the Godfather of Anime. Below you will see a little topic about him, followed by a list of his works. To help me, the information was gathered from tezukainenglish.com and wikipedia.

Osamu Tezuka was born in 1928 and was tormented by his fellow classmates because of his lithe frame and wavy hair. He was also into Western Cartoons and from what I read in a different artical, watched alot of them during WWII. He wrote his first manga at age 17. Tezuka went off to study medicine, and even got his degree, but never practiced it. Instead, he became a very influencial manga-ka and started a "Golden Age" of manga. His series Tetsuwan Atom, known here as Astro Boy, was one of the first series to come to America in the 60's and is one of the ones that helped America gain more anime. The other anime in the 60's was known as Gigantor and I think there was another one but I can't remember the name. Children in America loved Astro Boy and it was redone a few years back. There is also going to be a CG Astro Boy Movie which is due out either later this year or early next year.

Osamu Tezuka's works make look very childish, you can see the western influence in his designs, but looks can be deciving. Astro Boy centers on a child robot forced to enter battle for instance.

Unico centers around a baby unicorn who is taken from his mother by Zephyr (The West Wind), because the Gods are jealous and feel that they are the only ones who can make people happy. They banish him to the Hills of Oblivion, but Zephyr can't do it, so she leaves Unico alone in various places. Unfortunatly, when he makes friends and people happy, she comes to take him away again, erasing his memory, and leaving him all alone. This Manga was printed in a girls magizine, and later on we meet Corn, Unico's sister who, unknowingly, falls in love with her brother. There was a pilot for this episode, but they didn't go through with making a series about it. However, three movies came out afterwards. Two of which can be viewed on youtube along with the pilot. The Fantasic Adventures of Unico is the first, and Unico in the Island of Magic is the second one. The third movie never made it to the US and is impossible to find.

Kimba the White Lion is another of his famous works, and centers around a lion cub called Kimba. His father was the King of the Jungle and made sure all the animals got along. He would steal cattle from the village, which in turn made the humans hate him. So they hired Hunters to get rid of them. The hunters took his pregnant wife, and when he went to find her, shot him dead. The took the mother on a ship, and she gave birth to Kimba. Unfortunately there was a storm, and while Kimba escaped, his mother did not. Instead, she told Kimba to return to the Jungle, and lead all the animals. This is the begining and the basis for this old series. I was lucky enough to find two discs containing the first four episodes. It is old, but still a classic.

Unfortunately Osamu Tezuka passed away in 1989 at the age of sixty. Some of his works he left unished, but he managed to put out over 700 works during the course of his life. I put this up because I think any fan of anime needs to know who this man is and all the great works that he did. Below is a chronological list of his work, though it does not contain all of his work.

That's quite a list.... indeed he was a great man. The fact that his works continue to outlive him is proof of that.... feels weird to have been born the same year he died though. :/

*EDIT*
Oh, and it bothers me that Kimba the White Lion got ripped off by Disney and was blended with Shakespeare's Hamlet to create The Lion King. Just compare the character designs and the stories. It CAN'T be just a coincidence.

Yeah, it's sad, but he will live on as long as people remember him and read/watch his works. That's why I posted up the thread. I really look up to the man and respect him alot. That's not to say I don't respect others, but I hold the most for him and Leiji Matsumoto (Known for Captian Harlock and Galaxy Express 999 as well as many others).

It's just too bad the Kimba Box set is well over 200 dollars. I'd like to get my hands on some Unico Manga though.

This is a little review for the 1984 anime by Osamu Tezuka, Bagi: The Might Monster Of Nature.
I viewed this entire movie on youtube earlier today and I must say, it was a very touching tale. The tale beings with Ryosuke, a young man on the hunt with a little boy named Chiko to kill a monster known as Bagi. Apparantly, the monster has gone around and killed a large number of people for the past five years. Chiko asked Ryosuke how he knows so much about the monster, and the remniscing begins. Back in his early days, the young man knew Bagi, and raised her until she was tossed out of his house. I won't tell you why for risk of spoiling it. And since the film is bout an hour and a half, I am afraid the begining is all I can give you.

The film is one that I found to be very sad. Much like Unico, everyone dislikes Bagi, including the young man Ryosuke who was her only friend, for reasons you will discover on your own. The animation is old so you can't expect to much and Bagi has her moments from being cute, sexy, to just strange looking depending on the angel she is presented at. Some of the moments made by Ryosuke, like the part where he yells at his shoes, provides us with some comedy in an otherwise depressing anime, and lightens the mood just a little bit.

If you would like to view the film for yourself, click the link below. It will take you the first part of Bagi: The Mighty Monter Of Nature.
