Should people be serious on the internet?

Serious Pro:

Facts such as a persons death will be easier to believe.

Serious Con:

Not as fun

Un-Serious Pro:

Fun and eaisier to tell jokes

Un-serious con:

A person might not know you are being sarcastic, then they will think what you are saying is true, and if you insult them sarcasticly, they will take it as a real insult and be mad at you and won't respect you on the internet. This also applies to jokes and pranks like april fools day and such.

Hey....
I seem to be stalking your threads!

Personally, I think that people should be srious with the ideas that they are trying to get across, and lighthearted in the excecution and in the elaboration of said ideas.
Remember kids! Taking things seriously will only encourage smarter people to come over and destroy your comments with funny jazz!

Darn... I was hoping that this topic would be about if the Internet was serious or not, not if it should be.

You know what? Screw it, I'm gonna make the topic about that anyways. :)

In most cases, the Internet shouldn't be treated as serious business... at least not to the extent of your own personal life. Because of the anonymity of the Internet, it's easier to get into quarrels over stupid things (like Sonic the Hedgehog or Lucario) and there are people on YouTube who threaten others for bashing each other or whatever. I'd be willing to bet that some of these same people complain about Twilight-obsessed fangirls who beat up Twilight haters despite the fact that these people aren't any better just because what they do is on the Internet instead of IRL.

That being said, there are times when you should be serious on the Internet, such as when you're discussing a mature issue in a forum or researching for medical information about obsessive compulsive disorder after having discovered that a good friend was diagnosed with it (and surely you don't want to stumble upon a joke about OCD and have you believe that it's serious, would you?)

In the end, it depends on the context of the website, or even the post/video/audio itself. Even though this is a forum based on Yu-Gi-Oh The Abridged Series (which is NOT serious business in and of itself), you'll see serious things happening on this site, whether it's in the serious discussion forum or elsewhere.

In places that require some communication with other strangers who you meet on the Internet, use your brain and discern whether or not you should take everything that goes on between you and the people you're communicating with seriously. Of course you're brain isn't perfect so you can misjudge at times when people are being serious and when people are joking; I know I've done this myself on a number of occasions (usually believing that people are being serious when they're joking). Usually it's pretty easy to tell the difference, though, so if you think something is borderline, then I recommend not responding to it at all until the context of the situation becomes clearer.

The sarcastic phrase, "The Internet is Serious Business" usually comes up when someone makes an insulting joke towards someone or something petty and some person gets offended enough to post a 10 minute rant on YouTube about it. Before you go off doing something like that, you have to think of a couple of things:

1. Does the person insulting you even know you? If not, then just completely ignore the person because s/he's not worth your energy. Let him keep living his/her life believing that you're an idiot instead of wasting breath trying to convince him/her that you're not, because most of the time it's not worth it.

2. If the person is someone whom you like/respect, if they're a reasonable enough person, you could probably choose to speak with this person in private telling him/her that you were hurt. But proclaiming your newfound hate toward this person and how you feel betrayed over a YouTube video or even a forum post is just silly. No reason to spread more drama than what's already been displayed.

I guess those are all my thoughts for now. I probably have more but it's 4 AM and I have no idea why I'm still up.

I generally agree with everything you have put, but this bit, is 100% ture, I like to make silly comments and joke about a lot and there are times, when I feel that I am being clearly silly, but poeple have mistaken my action as serious one and it causes me problems

No in all actually, the internet can be a big deal... especially if you have your personal information posted...
Employers can look at potential employees through sites like Facebook and Myspace.

The internet can be serious, and nothing like that.

Let's compare a bit, shall we?
Take some news website. It has serious stuff. Stuff that really happened.
Then compare it to...
/b/.
The place where no rules exist, the internet where serious loses it's meaning.

In my opinion, internet is just as serious as the people using it are.

Just the other day I tried this dating thing. And the woman was a perfect figure 8/ OMW she was a score. Weve been talking for weeks and after our 5 month of talking she just begins to make fun of me and talk about how I was a sucker for falling for someone like her and how could I take the internet serious.

Actually, I have an online relationship with a boy who's about three years older than me and lives in the Philippines. We take our relationship seriously but we act childishly at the same time. We never insult each other and we've even exchanged videos of ourselves and our daily lives of reality. There are some things about the internet we should take seriously, but there are other things about it that we shouldn't take seriously.

The internet is always serious business. I have never been more serious than when I do my daily YouTube Poop critiques. (The internet also gets me closer to my favorite bands in ways that would be impossible otherwise.)

It can be serious or as stupid as the things you say and do on it are. As a whole, I'd like to think it is, indeed, serious, but I can't be sure...

On the internet anything you do or say can and will be held against you in a court of law. Or, at least, on your facebook account because someone somewhere will hear about it.

I can say that my government sucks and get away with it. In fact, I'll do it in bold and nothing will happen. Watch me.

Don't see no secret agents looking for me. Maybe I should wait a bit longer...

EDIT: The spanish line meant 'The government sucks dicks'

Definitely not serious.

depends on how stupid you use the internet for. I use it for mostly research related to my college course so for that I think it is useful and serious. But for things like dub series like the abriged for example is not really serious but mostly for fun which isnt bad its just not important. So my answer is it depends on how you use the internet.

I fail to take anything seriously...

But really it all boils down the the site (or even the section of the site!) you are on.
Like if I'm on some news site reading through a mass murder newspost then that is serious, if I'm on a Yu-Gi-Oh! Abridged fansite then no.
