No worries, nearly every user has had issues with it at some point.

On that note, a brief explanation of the Visitor Message system, or VMs.

See the link at the bottom right of my posts labelled 'View Conversation'? That's one of the ways to send a VM to a person, specifically somebody who's sent you a VM. It takes you to the conversation between you and that user. If you post a VM there, the forum will alert them that they've received a VM. This also works if you click on their name/avatar to go to their profile and post a VM there.

When you post using the box you did, though, you just post a VM to yourself and the other person receives no notification.
