the anime is gurren lagann. its about a boy named simone, who worked for the village he lives in, and his job is to dig tunnells. (they live underground) wile digging, he finds this robot and he shows it to his bro, kamina. kamina deams of making it to the surface. simone figures out how to power up the robot, and they use it to get onto the surface...
