On SOPA

I’ve been told that I’m not doing enough for the whole Anti-SOPA effort, and I guess I should at the very least address my feelings here if nowhere else.

Don’t get me wrong, I think SOPA is terrible and should never be passed. I think these idiots trying to pass the bill are the last people who should have any say as to what goes on with the internet and its content, people who likely struggle to use their own email accounts let alone navigate a site like DeviantArt. I think censorship on the whole is wrong, and an artist has the right to express themselves however they wish.

Having said that, I am not afraid of SOPA.

Some people have noticed this and have misjudged my attitude as being something akin to apathy. But that’s not what it is. It’s not that I’m not worried that SOPA will pass. It may. But I’m not afraid what it suggests for me. I’m very afraid of what it means for other people, but me personally? Not so much.

There’s always been the looming threat of questionable legality regarding my internet work. The whole parody thing is a very grey area. Yet honestly, if someone came to my place of residence and told me “You are going to be sentenced to jail because you made fun of an anime series”, I would gladly take that punishment if need be. I don’t feel it would be all that justified, but if anyone had to take the sentence, I suppose I’d be amongst the first convicted.

The truth is, even if SOPA passes, it won’t change what I believe. I believe that the bill they’re trying to pass is wrong, inherently wrong. And as such, I would fight against it by simply continuing to work. If they passed a bill saying it was wrong to marry people from a different country, it would not prevent me from trying to marry the woman I love. Being separated by an ocean is about the same as being separated by prison walls.

It was once considered a crime punishable by death to argue that the world was anything but flat. That didn’t stop people who truly believed otherwise from saying just that. And so they died believing the truth.

I don’t think I can do much beyond continue to work on these silly parody videos. Unfortunately, most attempts I have made to present serious issues to my fans have been met with sarcasm or complaints that I’m not making new episodes. Some do listen, but I often wonder if I’m doing much good.

All I can do is continue doing what I believe in.

The world is round, people.

Thank you for continuing to keep the world round, and not blowing this out of proportion. I think you do a great deal of good by keeping to your ways. Thank you so much LK

IrisixMarik 01-18-2012 05:59 PM

I do not get it

musigal 01-18-2012 09:00 PM

Also, LK is in the UK, not in the US, where the bill is being proposed.

grimfang999 01-19-2012 03:57 AM

THEY MAY TAKE OUR RIGHTS, BUT THEY WILL NEVER TAKE...

OUR FREEDOM

Oh wait freedom=rights...

Um...

But you know what I mean :V

zsil 01-19-2012 03:29 PM

I've got a couple of things to say:

1. even though I live in the uk, I oppose this bill, It will indirectly effect many people across the planet, as alot of the worlds websites are run from america, and if a site is censored in the US, it may then be censored for people outside the country aswell!!

and 2. Little kuriboh posted on the site??? he never posts on the site!!! This must be rather special to him!!

Lomanic 01-19-2012 03:50 PM

LK is a hero in his own way.

Ebilkittyprincess28 01-19-2012 04:25 PM

Well said, LK! Well said!

Kale 01-19-2012 07:37 PM

Totally agree, except for one thing... People have known the world's round (in Europe at least) since ancient Greece. Perhaps you're thinking it not being the centre of the solar system? History Rant over.

Anyways, keep up the good work LK.

The world consists of three people, in my opinion: Selfish people, Neutral people, and Positive people. The selfish only care for new episodes, and will bitch until it is made, and if it doesn't fit their liking, they'll continue to complain. And then you have those people -- the positive people -- who support your actions, think they're brilliant, and love you for saying something. If you don't, that's fine, but it would've been better to do it. (I'm not telling you what to do. You do whatever you want, bro.)

I don't know how new you are. You have 3,000 posts, so I know you didn't join last week or something. LK isn't frequent in the site, by like, posting in the BAR, or playing forum games. Iirc, he doesn't post much, because when he DOES post, people start going ballistic and saying "OH MY GOD!!!! HI LK!!!!!!!" or "LK POSTED IN A BAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! / LK'S JOINING MY FORUM GAME?! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" some over dramatic thing. He posts news when he needs to.

Anyways. That's my two cents.

Tourniquet 01-29-2012 04:11 PM

That's all good about SOPA and PIPA, but has anyone consider that ACTA is the biggest threat above them all????
