Skype is much better for calling and webcam than it is at instant messaging. MSN definitely had its downfalls but at least you could customize it more.

At this point though, they really ought to make Skype browser-based. For what it does, it would be so much better if you could just login from a browser and do your business.

Skype is also extremely RAM inefficient and its ONLY asset is GROUP video chat. Text-based chat on Skype is much weaker, and by forcing the videochat-oriented program on those who prefer text chat, or dont have the RAM to manage it, its unfair to do so and can cause difficulties for those who are happy with how things are and dont want to lose their contacts by switcing to a different messenger. One-to-one video chats are/were still available via msn and as far as I can see Skype doesnt allow for permanent group chats, which for some allows me to communicate with people I usually wouldnt contact usually.
If MSN allowed group video messages, Skype would have nothing. The only reason they are shutting down MSN in favour of Skype is because A) They want more money and B) SKYPE IS POPULAR. |

Yeah pretty much.
Well it isn't just group video chat is what makes it better. There is also conference calling. And you are right, it is popular and almost everyone has a Skype. And you could switch your contacts over from MSN to Skype. The thing about MSN is that it kept crashing. It also got cluttered with useless features that slowed down performance. I do not mind the switch, but if Skype were to amp its instant messaging features, I would be much happier with it. |

Group video chat is only available if you have premium though.
I can't use my webcam in a group call. I liked the custom smilies in MSN. I'm not a big fan of the Skype smilies, there are only a few I like. Also I don't know what you mean by permanent group chats, grimmy but...the RC has moved been formed on Skype and it's still there. Been there since the 18th of February when it was made. |

I know... that is what I was saying about the useless clutter on MSN. It used to be so much simpler. Then they added all this... stuff... the main screen got really huge and annoying. I hated it.

I honestly don't see much point in changing email addresses. I have that hotmail one that I made as a kid and is inevitably unsuitable to put on a CV or use for anything professional, so I have my BT email address, which I use for mostly everything. Then I have my gmail because I use android and need a Google account... Plus it neatly groups all my Google play store purchase receipts together in one place. The hotmail one I now use as a spambox and for my Xbox live account. |
