PONYO
So did anyone else see Studio Ghibli's latest film, Ponyo? :) I thought it was fantastic - all hand drawn and b-e-a-utifully animated, with plenty of imaginative characters as you would expect from Miyazaki. I was actually very pleased with the English voice actors, especially Noah Cyrus as Ponyo. She gave a very energetic and adorable performance that I think fit Ponyo's character well.
It has a limited release, but it was playing at a few theaters near me, so I hope it is spread to enough theaters so anyone who wants to can see it. :) I was impressed to see many people in the theater, ranging from parents bringing small children who seemed to adore the movie, to groups of older teens and adults. Everyone in the theater seemed to be really absorbed into the film, laughing and gasping at cue, haha. It was a really fun experience. :) |

I don't really want to see it... It has Milry Cyrus's little sister and the Jonas Brother's little brother in it...

I really want to see it, but I'd have to drive out 30 miles to that one theater that actually has the movie. I'll wait until netflix or blockbuster gets it.

I had no idea this movie existed until I happened to see a advertisement for it while I was in the waiting room at the dentist's office. Sadly, I live in Red Neckington so unless I want to drive 60+ miles to a theater that will actually show this movie, I will not get a chance to see it. It's good to see it on the top 10 today, although I am a little disgusted that its behind G-force.

Honestly I know nothing about Miley Cyrus or the Jonas Brothers, but I cannot complain about their little siblings' acting in this film. I don't think they did a bad job at all and I think the girl voicing Ponyo did a great job, actually. I mean really who gives a crap who their siblings are?
With many Ghibli films, I actually prefer the English versions because the quality of the voice acting is generally better. The Japanese actors are often okay, but don't seem to add the appropriate emotions.(eg Spirited Away.. couldn't stand the Japanese actors in that one) Ponyo's Japanese actor was also adorable, however. |

Plus the rest of the cast is pretty strong, AND it's a ghibli film, how can you go wrong? |

Haha well actually, the theme song WAS butchered into a teeny bopper version. It kept generally the same lyrics, but just sounded awful.
The cute ポニョ ポニョ ポニョ さかなのこ ; あおい うみから やってきた (ponyo ponyo ponyo sakana no ko; aoi umi kara yattekita - ponyo ponyo ponyo fish child; from the blue sea she is) was turned into "ponyo ponyo ponyo tiny little fish; she's a little fish from the deep blue sea" for the radio version and "ponyo ponyo ponyo fishy in the sea" for the end credits version. It just sounds awkward and for the radio version they completely poppified it. ._. That is my one complaint, haha. Last edited by fairywings; 08-18-2009 at 03:03 PM. |

Yesyes, or just leave the theater before the gorgeous film you just saw is corrupted by the terrible end theme, haha.

I just saw the movie a few hours ago, and dear god, it made me go "d'aww" about 500 times. The ending was a bit corny, but hey. Cute movies go like that. Also, Fujimoto is the lulz. Aged-rocker looking wizard's line of "Respect your father!" made me burst into laughter. |

I would have liked the movie so much more if they didn't clearly use certain Disney kids younger siblings names' as the advertisment
...its good to know that they really took the time to find real talent instead of finding the first kids related to famous people...*cough* |

i haven't seen the american version but i watched the japanese version with my daughter a few weeks ago. we loved it! i doubt we're going to bother watching the american version since there was no problem following along with the subtitles on the japanese one. it had a very high aww factor and the drawings were gorgeous.

I liked the whole thing. Animation was usual top notch, and I felt it was everything I thought it was going to be.
My eyes were bleeding from all the cute @_@ lol |
