I had to read this for my GCSE english and I've got the actual GCSE on Tuesday. Fun times. Atticus' faults were that it was tha he was modest but VERY firm minded in his views. This can be both a blessing and a curse like when he doesn't believe his son killed ******** (dont want to spoil it). Atticus I personally felt had things to hide taht maybe he did not want his kids to learn, like the racism. Unusual as they are the son af a lawyer and yet they seem shocked at the pure amount of racsim in the town. This might be his flaw, that he si an overprotective parent.

Well he is a single parent. But he was also the only one brave enough to take the case even though he knew there was going to be a guaranteed guilty verdict, despite the evidence! Maybe that is what he wanted to show his kids, the pure racism that there is in the town, and to hopefully not, be like that.

I probably would have liked the book if the english teacher hadn't butchered it as badly. I mean, she skips out loads of pages and then decides to preach about 2 lines for the rest the lesson! I think when we've finished it in class, I'm going to read it again by myself.
But I think there are some funny bits in it... like Scout's ham costume or when Scout goes around cursing for no apparant reason. ^_^

Ha! My English teacher was awesome when we read it last year. I think he liked it mostly for the "Pass the damn ham" scene. However, I enjoyed the book from the first page. It truly made me laugh from time to time, though the movie was a little out there in my mind. TKAM actually proved better to me than I thought it would be, since I was reading it as an assignment. I was just glad it didn't turn out to be another "Great Expectations."

I enjoyed this book, but I agree with what some other people have already said: Atticus was not a realistic character, so it was hard to relate to him. It seemed to grate with the characters of Scout, Jem and Dill, who I personally found very realistic and sympathetic.

I read this book a few months back and I loved it. My alias has been Atticus (which I tend to use more than my real name these days) for quite a while before I even knew of this book, so whenever I use it there's usually someone who brings up Mr.Finch.
As for agrajag's comment about Atticus not being realistic: I found I could relate to him a great deal, but apparently I'm weird...

I really loved this book. but we had to do all this shit for school including annotating the whole thing and doing a packet where we had to find quotes and explain their meaning and not to mention the daily quizzes. It kinda ruined the book for me. now i just want to strangle Harper Lee

My favorite character was Miss Maudie because she seemed like the nice old lady that lived down the street. She really was a good person and shared Scout's distaste of tea parties and did not take part in the discriminatory gossip of her lady acquaintances.

My least favorite character would have to be either Mrs. Dubose, the evil morphine addict or Bob Ewell. But everyone hates him anyway. I used to really dislike Aunt Alexandria at first but she seemed really empathic at the end.

I was also a bit angry with Mayella but I got over it when I realized and accepted that she lied to the court to protect herself from her father. <img src='/images/emoticons/smiley5.png'>

All in all, it's a great book, not my favorite, but among the most important. It shows us how useless institutions like a court of law becomes in the hands of a prejudiced society. All the evidence quite clearly pointed towards Tom's innocence but there was no justice done by the court. But in the end Bob got what he deserved.

It makes us look back at our ancestors and feel shame. More shame than when you have sex on a table/play children's card games.

Atticus seemed too noble but despite him acting like it, he never lived up to it because he could have probably saved Tom from being charged guility. Saying a speech in front of ignorant racists wasn't going to make a difference and I think he knew either way that Tom was going to be guility. My favorite character was Scout because I could relate to her more.. being loud and always a tomboy despite Aunt Alexandra trying to change her ways. I hated Mrs. Dubose though... even though she died, I couldn't find any sympathy for her whatsoever. She treated everyone like crap so why should anyone feel sorry for her, especially Atticus? It's a great book and all but sometimes the author brooded too much over simple little boring things or the characters. It didn't really get interesting until the middle when the trial was near. Seriously though, I wish my English teacher hadn't made us do so much work on it like writing chapter reviews for each chapter and then getting 10 vocabulary words from almost every chapter. In order to actually be interested in this book, you don't do a page of writing of what the chapter was about... the story just unravels by itself anyways. They shouldn't have made a movie on it though... bad idea there. <img src='/images/emoticons/smiley4.png'>

A classic book, I was enthralled with this from the first page to the last. I fell in love with the character of Scout as she went through her adventures in her quiet Southern town. It was written well so as that the reader could quickly become one within the pages. I read this three months ago and when I picked it up I couldn't really put it down until I was done. If you haven't read it, please do so.

I honestly loved this book. t's clear that the author was born quite a bit before her time, but Harper Lee did an amazing job with this book. It should be manditory to read it. It touches on so many issues, but it's very, very well written. It stays with you long after you've finished the novel. Many recomendations here.

I read TKAM last year. Or rather, I started it and got bored and didn't finish the last few chapters. Maybe it's because I don't really read much, but I didn't find this book to be very interesting, the characters were okay but not the most memorable, I thought Atticus was far too perfect, etc. We also watched the movie adaption in school.
