Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Discussion of the game, FE:PoR. Or the 6th/9th game in the series. For nearly end game battles, please use the spoiler tags, just in case someone gets well...spoiled.
[ For the Four Riders, they proved no real challenge. Petrine; Ilyana weakened her, and Ike used Aether. Bertram; He was actually really easy. His attacks never hit, and I mostly used ranged fighters like Ilyana, Oscar, Rolf, etc. Bryce; Son-Of-A-Bitch was so damn easy. I mostly attacked with Ilyana, since I needed the EXP for her to reach Level 20 [Promoted]. In fact, I believe like Bertram, I killed him with Ilyana. Black Knight; Easiest one of the lot. No, seriously. First turn, Ike used Aether, weakened him to more than half health. Next turn, the Black Knight attacked [thankfully he didn't activate his ability], and Ike counter attacked with Aether; killing him. I beat the Black Knight in one turn. ] |

[ Seriously, the Black Knight is all about luck. If Ike doesn't aether at least twice then you don't have a chance. And if the Black Knight hits you with Luna then it's hard to get back on track. ]
This game is when I started to lose interest in the Fire Emblem series. I only beat this one twice and I never even finished Radiant Dawn. The newer Fire Emblem games just don't have the depth that the earlier games had. Fire Emblem 7 (Fire Emblem in the US) is my favorite game of all time and this game really can't even compare in my opinion. Path of Radiance is still a good game, but this is where they started omitting great parts of the previous games like support conversations (the new system is garbage) and the link arena. I liked the addition of the bonus maps at the end of the game, but I still would have preferred a link arena. |

I have recently found out that Marcia is actually a decent unit.
Not the BEST, but, she's decent. |

So... I take it no one else plays Path of Radiance, then. That's a shame.

Path of Radiance is an inferior Fire Emblem game. Good for 2 or 3 playthroughs, but nothing spectacular. Play Fire Emblem 6 or 7. The handheld games are in an entirely different league.

Meh, I don't see why everyone thinks FE7 is so amazing. I never got the urge to replay it after the first time. I didn't even bother finishing Hector's story. I've played all the FE games that have been released in America so far and I prefer FE10 and Shadow Dragon.

I guess since I'm asking you to defend your choice of game, it would be discourteous of me not to do the same. I'll start by saying Fire Emblem 7 is my favorite game of all time. It has everything I want in a good RPG. It has a huge cast of great characters with fleshed out back stories, a fun and simple combat system, and fantastic replay value. This is true of many Fire Emblem games, but I've found this one to be superior for several reasons.
1. Balanced Characters If you've played Radiant Dawn, you should have a pretty clear idea of what I'm talking about. My main issue with Radiant Dawn, the issue that kept me from finishing the game, was that your characters power levels were so staggered that you had to rely on your strongest fighters to clear some parts of a level while your other characters starve for experience. Many enemies were so strong that it required you to use your all powerful laguz to kill them, even though they gain little to no experience. The only comparable character in FE7 is Marcus, who can be an experience hog if not used properly. In FE7, all your characters can perform competently enough on their own without the help of the superpowered Marcus. This makes it easier for weaker characters to gain experience and doesn't limit you on what characters you can practically use. 2. Strategy vs. Strength In FE7, the main break down of every battle is this: Your team is outnumbered. Each member of your team is stronger than the average member of the enemy team. The boss is just as strong as one of your units and has a terrain/weapon advantage. The boss usually requires teamwork between 2-3 of your units to defeat. Obviously some missions have different requirements, but this is true for most cases. Where the strategy comes in is not defeating the enemies you are clearly superior to, but accomplishing a side mission within a level's "time limit." In some levels, it is acquiring all the treasure before an enemy thief steals it. Other times its visiting a village before bandits can destroy it. For this you need to sacrifice caution for speed and stretch your small army very thin. It takes planning and a small amount of luck to complete a mission perfectly. This adds a challenge to the game without making it harder for people who just want to play to see the story. The game lets you play to your abilities and doesn't force you to fight for survival. The challenge is there if you want it and risks are rewarded, but you aren't penalized for opting to take the safe route. 3. Replay Value I am not a completionist. I am not going to replay a game for an added scene, a new costume, a trophy, or an achievement. Artificially adding "replay value" to a game by inserting worthless trinkets to collect isn't worth my time. I am of the opinion that replay value comes from a well made game, not useless collectibles that do nothing. This game has true replay value. I play the game again and again because I want to, not because I get a shiny trophy for beating it 10 times. Every playthrough is a unique experience, a chance to try something I've never done before. I can use different characters every time. I can try for the hidden level which I've only seen 3 times despite almost 20 playthroughs. I can see different support conversations that give different stat bonuses to characters I've used before. This game is 8 years old and is still siting in the GBA slot of my DS. I've played many games since, but I always come back to this one. I see that with younger gamers, they tend to latch onto the first game in a series that they played and regard it as the best even though they have went back and experienced the older ones. This is extremely prevalent in Zelda and Super Smash Bros fans where younger fans argue that Twilight Princess is better than Ocarina and Brawl is superior to Melee. I'm not going to presume to know why you prefer the newer Fire Emblems, but from my perspective this looks like what is going on. I may be looking at things through my nostalgia goggles, but I can't image why anyone would like Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn over the GBA games. |

I personally consider the storyline and character backstories of FE games to be just an added frill. I don't need to read a novel about the character's backstory. It is nice to have fleshed out characters, but I mostly care about gameplay. To me, FE7 was not anything special gameplay wise, and learning about the characters was a bit tedious. When I play an FE game, I just want to defeat the opposing army in the most efficient and quickest way possible. I like to challenge myself to use different characters, and learn new strategies. I did not find FE7 to have an amazing, unique plot or characters, so that did not endear it to me. It was not very challenging either, although I will admit I only played it on normal. The gameplay is the same as most Fire Emblems, so I did not think it was anything special. I am probably a bit biased against it because it did not meet my expectations. I have always heard it was one of the best games and that it was superior to the newer ones, so I went out of my way to find a copy of both of the GBA games. I did not find FE7 to be anything special, so I was a bit irritated. FE8 on the other hand was a little bit more interesting thanks to the creature campaign.
I'm not saying my personal favorites are any better than FE7, I just don't understand why it would be considered superior to them. I feel like the gameplay is better in the newer ones, so that's why I prefer them. The first FE game I played was FE9 btw Last edited by MusicMaker; 07-25-2011 at 01:29 PM. |

Should definitely try to play it on a Hard Mode then...Hard Mode Hector is pretty tough since you're faced with a constant barrage of swords unlike for Eliwood where there are a decent mix between swords and axes...but with Eliwood the swords don't matter much because as Killshot pointed out, you have Marcus with you. Hector starts with himself, Matthew, Serra and Oswin...Yes Oswin generally can handle the swords but he's only really strong in the defense and is a stage 1 unit unlike Marcus who is already stage 2 for you.
As for the creature campaign...it's "all right". There is no real challenge in my opinion for it, it's merely a test of endurance really. You use all the equips you have to try and make it to the end, getting rewarded nicely if you do...but monsters have no real bite to them...you just need a Bishop and things to protect it and you're pretty much good to go lol. |
