Things children should ALWAYS grow up with
As I was paying attention to the Grade 1 teacher's lesson about Cinderella, and the problems/solution/characters/story involving Cinderella, the grade 1s admitted that they did not know the story of Cinderella. And I thought, "Why not? Just because you're male, means you can't watch Cinderella? What about the girls?! Why do so many people not know Cinderella?!" So then I thought, what else did they not know about? This thread is here, for everyone to suggest things for kids to grow up with.
Books, Movies, Television Shows, Songs, whatever. Things that they HAVE to grow up with. My vote goes to classic Disney movies -- Lion King (The original, not those dumb other two movies), Aladdin, Cinderella, Jungle Book, etc. What are yours? Keep in mind you can also post the Disney movies I have not mentioned. |

Every child should be read the Hobbit at some point in their life, even if they can already read it.
Also, night before Christmas. When I left home till my niece was born a year ago, my mom insisted on calling and reading it to me every Christmas. Now my niece has to put up with it. XD |

When I was a child my dad read me the Hobbit
He also read me the entire Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy series... great books. Every child should grow up with a decent grasp of general knowledge as a foundation to be built upon in greater detail in schools You know you've been a bad parent when your child gets all the way to college without ever having heard of the Holocaust. |

this might just be my rural upbringing talking too, but you should always teach your child basic survival skills like camping/making a fire/what poison ivy is/what's safe to eat in the wild/ etc

I never watched most of those disney classics as a child...or as an adult
kids need to know the value of a dollar the value of money in general, one cannot go threw life expecting everything because one day their whole world will come crashing down around them |

I second that, holy.
I also love the jungle jam and friends: the radio show! tapes/cd's. My childhood would not have been the same without it. and Wishbone, a tv show about a dog who reads classic literature. MUST BE INCLUDED Last edited by musigal; 04-24-2012 at 06:56 PM. |

There are two things children must learn and love forever.
1. Pokemon 2. How not to be retarded. I was in a middle school class where someone asked if John Wilkes Booth was alive or dead. That deserves a beating, in the middle of class. Please parents, your children don't need to be stupid beyond belief. Or I'm coming after you. |

Disney is for little girls that don't know any better.

^ This. Which also backs up my theory that Twilight is the 'Disney' for teenage girls, who clearly don't know any better.

The two things I say children shouldn't grow up without is music and comic books.
My mom listened to pretty much every kind of music possible when I grew up. Every thing from Opera to Metal to Old Country to Grunge and so on. And because of that I absolutely love music. I listen to tons of music all the time. Music shows great creativity and emotion among other things. It helps with expression and learning an instrument helps with great discipline. Plus, I find it to be fun and enjoyable. I also read a lot of comics and watched a lot of the cartoons associated with them growing up, mainly Marvel. I find them to be another great and enjoyable art form. And some of them teach great lessons like Spider-Man's "With great power comes great responsibility" and others. The comics and shows taught you that just because you're not a "superhero" doesn't mean you can't be great and just because they are superheros doesn't mean they don't have normal, human, and relatable problems that you can grow and learn from. Both Music and comic books are forms of art. So if I had to give a very general answer, that would be it. I think children should grow up with some kind of art in their lives. Whether it be writing, drawing, music, whatever. It's good to listen to music or read a book. Both help show expression and creativity, but I find making/playing music and writing a story/poem/whatever works better. But, hey, everybody starts somewhere and different things work for different people. |
