Like Ocean said, Son Goku was originally pulled from an old Japanese folktale (Journey to the West or something like that) and was simply an enlightened monkey who helped the hero along his way. It's not uncommon to see monkeys or monkey-like characters named Goku who wield a staff in various Japanese works.
