Most manga fans only read manga... and web comics.
What about western comics? DC, Vertigo, Marvel there are some insightful issues out there. I will start by recommending the best of the best "Sandman" by Neil Gaimen; most people don’t realize he started out on comics. And don’t give me flack for saying "comics" because they are. So how bout it? Is there anything you would like to recommend?

Oh jeez, I'm a total utter comic book nerd XD
first I would probably suggest the X-men series (because I was obsessed with that before even knowing what manga was) although theres plenty of universes and eras to choose from. 'Squee's Wonderful Big Giant Book of Unspeakable Horrors' by Jhonen Vasquez is pretty good too if you like dark hurmor and don't mind gore... or swearing... or many other things ^_^'

Don't forget the comic Squee spawned from: Johnny The Homicidal Maniac (also by Jhonen Vasquez).
A friend recently recommended a comic to me that sounded interesting, though I haven't been able to investigate it yet: Scud the Disposable Assassin (Rob Schrab). Since you already know about Sandman, I would suggest V for Vendetta (Alan Moore). Tought provoking stuff. My only complain would be that the character models tend to blend into each other and make distinguishing people difficult.

I suggest any of the Marvel "Ultimate" series, which rock my socks, and the series PS239. XD It's super cool. Think of kids with super powers...in grade school.
The film Sky High is like a high school version of it, however I assure all that PS239 came out way beforehand. >^_^< MEOW!

Start with the Ultimates then go Spider-man,Fantastic 4,and last with X-Men. My choice cuts:
V for Vendetta or Watchmen Early Stan Lee and John Romita Spider-man Chris Claremont's first run on the X men, Dark Phoenix et al. The Transformers Unicron saga by Simon Furman, Geoff Senior and Andrew Wildman.

One of my favorite old reads of good western comics has to be Jack Kirby's Fourth World. The King himself left marvel in 1970 to work on his masterpiece in DC. He started with Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen, to introduce bits and pieces of his world and continued on from there, creating 3 original comics to which he was drawing and writing four comics at once. Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen #133-148, The Forever People 1-11, New Gods 1-11, and Mister Miracle 1-18. It was regrettibly canceled, not everyone got it, but he added 72 pages during the reprint of the New Gods into 6 large comics in 1984, then finished it with The Hunger Dogs, though dc kept using the chars afterwards. They've started to collecting it into 4 Omnibus books, the first one is already out, and awesome. Beautiful art from the man who worked on Spider-man, the Fantastic Four, and Captain Marvel and a well written story. I reccomend it.

Already been mentioned but I'll put in one that always seem to be left out when Alan Moore is mentioned and that's his run on Swamp Thing, which completely changes the character and is just an amazing overall. Finally a more serious one - Maus. It's a true story about World War 2 which the author wrote from interviews with his father but the characters are all drawn as animals (mice and cats mainly) and despite what it sounds like it is a really moving story and deals with both Spiegelman's realtionship with his father as well as his father's story of WW2. He also did a comic called In The Shadow of No Towers which is about 9/11 which I've not read yet and was originally supposed to be published in The New York Times but got pulled because of some of the criticisms it made of the US government at the time. It's a huge book.

The only comics that ive really bought is Kabuki the alchemy by David Mack. But that was 3 years ago, so i don't know if you could find it now. Its so amazing.

I agree that anything by Allen Moore is awesome.
Batman: the Long Halloween is good. Hellboy is a good comic, especially the art. I also enjoy the myths involved too.

I would reccomend:
Nextwave by Warren Ellis Sandman by Neil Gaiman The first three volumes of Runaways by Brian K. Vaughan and Joss Whedon Fables by Bill Willingham Hellboy by Mike Mignola The first volume of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen by Alan Moore, and only the first volume I think the current run on Actions Comics by Geoff Johns has been pretty good So has Paul Dini's Detective Comics run, so I would reccomend that also.

Ed Brubaker's run on Captain America is very good also very epic, every story arc has built on the other
Alex Ross' Marvels Great look back the history of the marvel U with out all that sliding timeline stuff Captain Britain and MI 13 which has just started seems nice if you are tired of the Avengers books where no one trusts each other.
