This seems logical to me, mainly because it saves him a lot of time. If you haven't noticed there's hardly any submissions as of right now, versus the usual hundreds of captions that would have been posted by this point. Not to mention every page of captions had about the same 5 jokes used over and over, this will at least be more interesting for him if nothing else. I think the "caption contest suck" title is actually how he feels about some of the last ones, and you would too if you had to go through a hundred pages of bad jokes that people gave about 2 seconds to think of to find maybe 20 or so funny ones that people actually tried at. With AMVs, the amount of effort put in shows pretty easily in the product.

true, people do use the same joke, often crap, rarely funny, but i woul be pissed off too if i had to read the jokes i made up or predictable internet jokes

not to forget the percentage of the one most used word in one caption contest (such as about every third post had "fabulous" in it when we had that Pegasus plane caption... and now it's "ego" about everywhere you look)
