This city is afraid of me. I have seen its true face. The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown. The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout 'Save us!'... and Gon's Balls will whisper 'First... comes... rock!' Hah! Made you stare at Naruto's Marshmallow! Pushing the logo off-center to drive TheOcean insane.

seriously, most of the chars are so bland and one-dimensional i wouldn't care if zorc DID destroy the world..

Well, that may be true for you but I would disagree. There is a lot of personality in Yugioh, and I'm not just talking about the abridged series. You just need to look a little harder. Reading the manga might help, if you can find it anywhere.

lol wrong.
watched both the sub+ all the manga.
i just watched a lot more anime and seeing series with true character development makes this one seem really shallow by comparison.

yu-gi-oh fits into the shounen series type.
though some shounen series have better character development than others.i'm usually not that pretentious.
yu-gi-oh is on the lower end of the spectrum though, especially the anime. more towards the DBZ crowd.

what actually bothered me was that takahashi did try to give everyone some backstory and personality up till volume 8,especially yugi, but then pretty much threw it out the window for "moar card games!!!"

everyone was now either a cheerleader or a very bland version of themselves, who for some reason forgot everything they learned so far and acted like morons (like ryou, who seems to have forgot everything about the spirit of the ring and can't wait to put it back on after battle city...wtf????).

the new characters get a lot less developed, especially otogi, who after having his run as a "villain" is mainly forgotten.
marik got a little more attention and sympathy, but i couldn't care for anybody else.

also marik didn't have much of a distinct personality, he had a larger BACKSTORY than the rest.
i mean, what distinct trait does he have? is he good at something? does he have any quirks? no, not really, unless looking silly while riding a bike is "special"

yu-gi-oh went through the same process that every series goes through- the more characters you have, the less personality they'll have to share between themselves.

that's why death note worked so well for the 1st part- 2 characters, a lot more traits to go around.

Not necessarily. The Fountainhead entertains a main cast of 7 characters (Roark, Keating, Toohey, Wynand, Dominique, Francon, and Mallory). Yuugiou entertains a main cast of only 5 characters (Yugi, Atem, Ryou Kaiba, Bakura, Marik). Both works have too many subordinate characters to count, but that's why they're subordinate.
fix'd

He is. Always has been. From first episode to the last.

Ryou is a host. I'd consider him minor.

Kaiba is an interesting character to analyze, lol.
I guess, but he doesn't get a lot of development in the anime.

Kaiba has alot of shit drama that keeps pilling on throughout the seasons, even during some of the filler archs.

I consider Ryou a main character because, thematically, Bakura and Ryou are two sides of the same coin. Obviously that's not literally correct, but it's thematically necessary. The only example I can think of is The Scarlet Letter. Pearl isn't a main character in terms of involvement in the story, but Hester's main character status forces Pearl to be a main character too.
He's not completely static, and that's why I like him.
:3

I still wouldn't consider him main. No one actually knows him. We barely know anything about him. Again, he's the host for the main villian. To be a main character, he needs to be relevent to the plot 4 out of 5 times.

The show carries on Yugi's story for 5 seasons, lmao.

No, I don't really consider Marik a main character.

That's true. If you think Yugioh is black and white, you weren't paying close enough attention.

Indeed. Yu-Gi-Oh is a much deeper show that anyone would guess at first glance.

Yeah, I think Ryou's quite important too, you read a lot, don't you?~ I like your arguments

and Bakura's character development is really intriguing, he changes a lot from season 1 to season 2 and finally in season 5 he is just someone else...

imho, i don't think ryou's a main character, but it all boils down to semantics at the end. what's a main character? :V is it screen time? development? the char fan base?

most of us just go by gut instinct on who's a main and who's not. but when people wanna get technical...*shrug*

off-note: i see the point you're trying to make. interesting, although i disagree. :/ for me, pearl served more of an allegorical function. pearl as a human character didn't emerge until the end of the book.
