The American Civil War
I know what you are thinking.
Why is this a topic? We all accept (Except for the dangerously stupid) that racism was a huge issue, and in retrospect, we can all agree that the anti-Slavery opinion is the best one. However, this is not exactly what I wish to debate on. Since this site is mainly US-Americans, I want to know some things. Who would you have sided with? Do you feel the Union was correct in stating the Confederacy were rebelling states, that the Union must be preserved, and feel (as the Union claimed after 1863) that the Confederate States only rebelled due to fear of loss of Slavery? Or do you feel the Confederacy had a right to life, that their succession was constitutionally guarenteed, that they were losing State Rights to the Union slowly but surely, and that the Union were the aggressors? Of course, these aren't the only two sides, I really just want to know - which side do you feel was right, and please explain why. |

I think the union was morally right, but the confederacy were legally right, since all the confederacy supposedly wanted was to succeed from the union, and the union illegally denied them that right.
The union were the aggressors, but because they were indeed morally right and won, history will remember them as great heroes, and the confederates as devils. Happens all the time. |
