District 9
Alright, anyone seen it? I want to see it, but in Spain it's only released on September 18th (Spain sucks at movie releasing)
So, I want everyone's thoughts on District 9. And, for the love of god, don't put spoilers in your comments. Thank you. |

Just saw District 9 a few hours ago. Best Jackson movie so far. Was really happy that he didn't bore me with another three hour film. A lot of the scenes were a bit repetitive, but it was still pretty good.
One thing I didn't like about it was that we hardly saw any of the aliens. There were like two million of these things and we only saw about 50 of them in District 9. Where were they during the final battle? Why weren't they rioting about the whole eviction thing? |

Alright, I just saw District 9 and I must say: it is probably my favourite movie of all time. It was so god damn near perfect. THe only thing I really didn't like about it was that I just felt a few scenes seemed clichéd with family movies, such as that beginning scene with the little one where they're looking through the junk to build a machine. I felt that scene seemed too much like Transformers or something. But other than that, perfect movie. Now, to answer some of your questions, Noah.
Quote:
A2: Think of the aliens as blacks in South Africa pre-1990 (when South Africa didn't consider blacks as people...actually, come to think of it, the location of the movie was no coincidence). Would you, being segregated and being discriminated, stand up against a force which has a bigger advantage. In this case, it's humans. If the aliens even THOUGHT of starting a riot, they would be gunned down really easily. Their super-special-awesome weapons wouldn't help them fight an onslaught of humans. Plus, with the exception of Christopher and The Little One as far as I can tell, the prawns aren't very smart. The prawns are like the Indians when the Spanish forced them into signing a contract that would sell all their land when the Indians didn't even know how to read. The aliens were probably too scared to take on an entire human army in District 9. Just like how a group of black people before 1990 wouldn't dare rise up against an army of white people. |

honestly i thought it was very good. i can't give it a great though. the best thing i liked was the fact that the majority of the actors were unknowns, if they'd been regular actors i probably wouldn't've liked it at all. it was very well done over all but i felt something was lacking.

[ your same as me, just seen it about hour ago and thought it was clever with whole docmentary feel and very well filmed. Infact the whole thing was nice idea with it being humans bullying Aliens for once and done from view of media, plus this was strenghterned, because done with very good unknown actors (though the main guy kept going back to an manchester (place in england, if don't know) voice when he swore lol) and the camara work...etc was brilliant =Plus you could feel that is how humans would act, and it would be treated like the new Immigration /exploitation of weaker groups for their resources in unfair deals. however I felt something was lacking with main "bad guy" (though not real bad guy) being more a bully/thug than some well intended extremist or evil person out for himself, bascially wasn't dark enough and felt getting someone like the main character from Lord of War would have worked better here. And there was few silly moments, but they can be forgiven as in this kind of thing, will always have those, but I think its main problem is the aliens were too human for me ] |

I thoroughly enjoyed this film, it's very well made, and you get a very original feel.

District 9 is a great movie. The added bonuses are the fact that the actors were all unknowns and that it's not set in New York or London, but in a city no one saw coming, on a continent that is truly misunderstood by the stereotype-fed audience. Initially, I found the main character annoying and wussy, but my judgment (thankfully) proved off and he became pretty well-developed by the end. One objection I have to the movie is the fact that the prawns are rather human-like--I mean I know the point of the movie is to show how we treat strangers poorly without getting to see the humanity in them first--but they're aliens, what are the chances of them developing human emotions very similar to ours? Also, the bad guy is really one-dimensional ("RAWR I KILL PRAWNS I'M SUCH A BASTARD! HATE ME!") but...well...since spoiler tags aren't working with me, let's just say I liked his eventual fate.
Overall, it's an enjoyable movie. Sometimes it gets rather gory, with blood spraying the camera, but it's not downright disgusting. I left the theater feeling like my $6 was well spent. (I moviehopped to Inglorious Basterds afterwards, so that also contributed to my happy mood XD) Though one question is still bothering me...what were the prawns speaking? I always thought they were speaking in their own language, but my friend said they were speaking in really distorted English, so now I'm super confused...@__@ Last edited by Raulst; 09-25-2009 at 02:03 AM. Reason: what is with the new spoiler tag? |

Best science-fiction since Serenitiy and Star Wars! The rude showing of conflicts in the real world projected in a fictive movie is more than hillarious! Even more that nobodiy still care about racism in Southafrica. Its very depressing, that we need an example for racism like that.... In the real world were so much racism that at least even the dumbest man should have get it...Pretty example for our blind society, even more because that movie is one of the most underratest!
