Sales figures are no measure for game quality
GTA4, biggest letdown and overated game to date (sold my copy within 2 weeks of purchase, was considering giving it away to someone less.. uh.. fortunate?), and no, I wasn't expecting a San Andreas dose of extra activities and things to do, they said they were going to make IV an upgrade in the same manner that III was to 2, but they failed/lied, too many things to list and get off topic with... well, I will point out the lighting>cannot see car's true colour, if at all> cars are covered in black shading + boats have no reflection>wth

It seems that people who liked FF7 don't like FF8 and vice versa, I'm all for FF8 (forever in my heart), which I got on launch day after liking the type of game FF7 was even though I only watched my brother play it most of the time, (I have since tried to play FF7 and it just doesn't do anything for me)
I agree with metal gear solid 2 being overrated, poor repetetive environment design, didn't play it till half way between 2 and 3's release, 3 was incredibly better but the MGS of 1998 is king, 3 was let down a bit by rediculous bike stunts and unwanted cleavage and some wierd dialogue/screenplay (ocelot's 'meow' to summon his unit)
